AEO certification
For some time now we have been preparing for our application for the status of Authorised Economic Operator (AEO). With this customs security certificate Van de Put wishes to demonstrate that it is well-organized, and that the products it has under its care, are safe.
When it comes to the procedures, you can rely on it that Van de Put is second to none. With the use of the Chainware and KBT software systems Van de Put already has a safeguarded information system for declaration procedures and tracking and tracing products within the company.
Security is another criterion. The Customs Authorities demand from an AEO company that strangers cannot (or only with difficulty) get access to the goods, and afterwards an AEO company should be able to prove who has been at the site and in the offices and sheds. Thus, in the event that an incident has occurred, Van de Put can show who has been around. Meanwhile, several adjustments have been made in the company for this purpose.
As the last customs audit will be taking place in the near future, Van de Put expects to be AEO certified before summer.

Brunch anniversaries
We are very proud that we had as many as 8 employees who had been with our company for 12.5 years in 2009 and one who celebrated his 25th employment anniversary with Van de Put. In addition, we have 9 colleagues who have been with us for 10 years.
To celebrate the 12.5- en 25-year employment jubilees we organize a brunch annually. In 2009, the brunch took place on 4 October. The respective employees received a present of their own choice, and their partners were given the attention and flowers they deserved. Of course, they were all put in the limelight with a brief personal word and a word of gratitude for their great cooperation in all those years. After the official part, we enjoyed a delicious brunch together with the family they had invited and many colleagues.
It is quite special to have that many jubilees. These loyal employees are an asset for our company.

New Cargo Checkpoint
On Monday, 21 September, the Cargo Checkpoint at Schiphol was officially opened by the State Secretary of Finance, Mr Jan Kees de Jager. The Cargo Checkpoint is a joint initiative of the Customs Authorities, Schiphol Airport and KLM/Air France Group. At the Checkpoint, aircraft containers and plates can be scanned without any detrimental effect on the logistic stream. The containers and plates can pass through without having to stop. First, the cargo is led through an X-ray scanner and then through a ‘sniffer corridor’, where drug dogs can do their job and where advanced scanning equipment is used to check the cargo for drugs, explosives and other forbidden substances and materials. If nothing is detected, the goods can proceed on their way, but suspicious containers or plates are taken out of the queue to be submitted to closer inspection in the ‘unpacking
street’. The rest can pass through, without any hindrance.
This Cargo Checkpoint is unique in the world, a clear indication that the Netherlands are a frontrunner in the international field of control and security. For the time being, the project is a pilot of one and a half year. When the pilot has proved successful, several Checkpoints will be set up at different locations at Schiphol.

Chairman ACN-FENEX Sector Council Forwarding Agents
In the past 5 years, Moniek van de Put was the chairwoman of the ACN-FENEX Sector Council Forwarding Agents.
ACN is short for Air Cargo Netherlands, the trade organization for the air cargo industry. There are several sector councils, each representing a certain sector, such as the Sector Council Handling, the Sector Council Airline Companies and the Sector Council Forwarding Agents, which Moniek chaired for 5 years.
Moniek van de Put: ‘Being allowed to be in such a position is fun and useful. You are directly involved in everything, rather than hearing about things later on, after everything has been arranged. In this way you can have some influence. In addition, you build a large network of people, and this may come in handy again and again!’
After five years, she decided it was the right moment to call it a day and step down for a successor.
During a crowded meeting in the Schiphol Building, on 7 September, she passed the gavel to Ivo Aris of Rhenus.

Certifications
After a recent audit for ISO and HACCP, our certificate was renewed until October 2012. These certifications and the AEO certification yet to be received (see elsewhere in this newsletter) indicate that Van de Put has got things well-organized.

Trade fairs
In the past period, too, we attended several fairs all over the world. We had a stand at the Flowers 2009 fair in Moscow in September, at the Hortifair in Amsterdam and in Bogota (Colombia) in October, at the China World Fruit & Vegetable Trade Fair in Guangzhou (China) in November and at the Fruit Logistica in Berlin in February. Still ahead: the Hortec in Kenya and a trade fair in Kazachstan.

Amber Alert
You cannot bear to think about your child suddenly having disappeared from one moment to the next. That is why a system was introduced in America in 1996 that enables the matrix signs over the motorways to be used when a child is missing. Since the system was introduced, over 400 children have been found.
One year ago, this system was also launched in the Netherlands. The police send a message by SMS, when a child is missing. This has already yielded several positive results. Amber Alerts are only sent when the child’s life or health are feared to be in serious jeopardy. This is expected to occur 10 times per year at most.
As a company we have thought about the possibilities of participating in this system. This means that when a child goes missing, all drivers will receive a message, so that the network is expanded and the chance of finding the child is considerably increased. All mobile business numbers have been submitted for participation. In addition, a message will be sent via the board computer when a child is missing. Look at www.amberalertnederland.nl for further information.

Tax Authorities/Holland-Midden and Customs Authorities enter into Horizontal Supervision covenant
On 10 December last, a Horizontal Supervision (Horizontaal Toezicht) covenant was signed by the Tax Authorities/Holland-Midden and the Customs Authorities. A participant in the pilot Horizontal Supervision Floral Chain (Horizontaal Toezicht Bloemenketen), J. van de Put Fresh Cargo Handling has taken a major step in the pilot project by signing the covenant with the Tax Authorities/Customs Authorities.
For the Tax Authorities/Holland-Midden this covenant is the first that came about in cooperation with the Customs Authorities. We are proud that the Customs Authorities and the Tax Authorities have so much confidence in our organization that they were prepared to launch this project with us (the third company in the Netherlands). The eventual aims of participation in Horizontal Supervision are less delay by controls and lower administrative expenses – in other words: more efficient handling of the goods flows. Please, contact André Pekelaer, apekelaer@vandeput.nl, for further information.

Manager Ethiopia
As you probably know, we and several partners have had a logistic company in Ethiopia for several years now. This company is Ethiopian Perishable Logistics, or EPL for short, and Flora Holland is one of the partners. For florists, growers and other parties we collect flowers and vegetables from the farms, book shipments and perform other logistic activities.
Although we are quite satisfied, we are aware that we still have a long road ahead in Ethiopia and that there is much room for improvement. Therefore, we decided to take on a local who will take care of the Van de Put business exclusively. His name is Tatek Hailemariam, born and bred in Ethiopia. He has many years’ experience in air cargo and knows all our customers in Ethiopia well. This new manager will become the face of Van de Put in Ethiopia and will ensure that everybody knows who we are and what we can do. He will do his utmost to achieve maximum return from our company (EPL) in Ethiopia and to make an inventory of what the local customers want and what we can do additionally. An eye for the market and an eye for opportunities – and Tatek has both.
We think this is a major step forward, and we are confident that he will do excellent business in Ethiopia on our behalf. Please, contact Edwin Boning, eboning@vandeput.nl, for more information on EPL.

EORI
With reference to new European legislation, a so-called EORI (Economic Operator Identification and Registration) number has been assigned to all companies established and active in Europe. With this EORI number these companies can be identified in all member states. In the near future, it will be compulsory that this number is stated with all customs transactions. You can send us your EORI number online by means of the form on our web site: www.vandeput.nl/eori/EORI.php.

Air cargo top 100
The IATA air cargo Top 100 is published every year. It is based on export turnover. We proudly announce that we rank ninth on this national list!
The Top 100 is about all export air cargo, so not only perishables. We are the first company on the list that is entirely in Dutch hands. In 2008, we came in 15th.
